The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports increased by X% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of X%. The volume of export peaked in 2023 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, cement exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2023. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2023.
Exports by Country
In 2023, Egypt (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) was the main exporter of cement in Africa, comprising X% of total export. Zambia (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons). All these countries together held near X% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest cement supplier in Africa, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt totaled X%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Senegal (X% per year) and Zambia (X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2023, surging by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 when the export price increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Cement Imports
Imports in Africa
Cement imports expanded markedly to X tons in 2023, with an increase of X% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cement imports dropped modestly to $X in 2023. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2023, Libya (X tons) and Mali (X tons) represented the key importers of cement in Africa, together committing X% of total imports. Mauritius (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by South Africa (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Sierra Leone (X tons). All these countries together held approx. X% share of total imports. Gambia (X tons), Niger (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Sudan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Sudan (with a CAGR of X%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mali ($X), Libya ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2023, with a combined X% share of total imports. Niger, Madagascar, South Africa, Mauritius, Gambia, Botswana, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan and Ghana lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
Sudan, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2023, with a decrease of X% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Mauritius ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Niger (X%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
