The African frozen chicken cut market shrank to $X in 2022, which is down by -5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Algeria, Tanzania, Kenya, Sudan, Uganda, Somalia, Morocco, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cameroon and Cote d'Ivoire lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Somalia (with a CAGR of +5.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of frozen cuts of chicken exported in Africa reduced to X tons, waning by -3.5% on the year before. Overall, exports saw a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen chicken cut exports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the largest exporter of frozen cuts of chicken, committing 61% of total exports. Namibia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Zambia (14%) and Rwanda (5.6%).

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -6.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Rwanda (+387.2%), Zambia (+72.4%) and Namibia (+12.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +387.2% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Zambia, Namibia and Rwanda increased by +13, +12 and +5.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Namibia ($X) and Zambia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 93% share of total exports. Rwanda lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 3.7%.

Among the main exporting countries, Rwanda, with a CAGR of +429.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 18% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, frozen chicken cut export price increased by +72.2% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, overseas purchases of frozen cuts of chicken decreased by -7.6% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +78.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, frozen chicken cut imports reduced to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +86.9% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

In 2022, Ghana (X tons), distantly followed by Angola (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Congo (X tons) and Gabon (X tons) were the major importers of frozen cuts of chicken, together mixing up 68% of total imports. Benin (X tons), Liberia (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons), Libya (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +11.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Guinea (+29.0%), Mozambique (+25.0%), Mauritania (+17.8%), Congo (+15.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+14.7%), Liberia (+14.2%), Sierra Leone (+10.5%), Gabon (+6.4%) and Libya (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +29.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-1.1%), Benin (-2.7%) and South Africa (-2.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Ghana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congo, Guinea, Liberia and Mozambique increased by +11, +5.3, +3.3, +1.9, +1.9 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported frozen cuts of chicken in Africa, comprising 28% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana stood at +9.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-5.1% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+11.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -6.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Libya ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
