Sheep; Live Price in Spain (FOB) - 2023

The average sheep; live export price stood at $136 per unit in August 2023, with an increase of 11% against the previous month. Over the period from August 2022 to August 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 an increase of 21% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $157 per unit in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to August 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Libya ($162 per unit), while the average price for exports to Lebanon ($91.0 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Portugal (+3.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In August 2023, the average sheep; live import price amounted to $92.8 per unit, increasing by 9.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2022 when the average import price increased by 20% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $193 per unit in October 2022; however, from November 2022 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($156 per unit), while the price for Portugal totaled $89.0 per unit.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

In 2022, shipments abroad of sheep; live increased by 21% to 1.5M units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sheep; live exports soared to $192M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The exports peaked at $196M in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
