Exports in MENA

In 2023, the amount of nitrogenous fertilizers (mineral or chemical) exported in MENA soared to X tons, increasing by X% compared with 2022 figures. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, nitrogenous fertilizer exports fell to $X in 2023. Overall, exports enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2022, and then reduced in the following year.

Saudi Arabia (X tons), Oman (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Iran (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) represented roughly X% of total exports in 2023. Turkey (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Algeria, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2023, the export price in MENA amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed temperate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of X%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2022, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2023, purchases abroad of nitrogenous fertilizers (mineral or chemical) was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, nitrogenous fertilizer imports declined significantly to $X in 2023. Overall, imports saw a temperate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2022, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

Turkey prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2023. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), generating an X% share of total imports. The following importers - Israel (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Iraq (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.

Imports into Turkey increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Iraq (X%), Morocco (X%) and Israel (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Iraq emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in MENA, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. The United Arab Emirates experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Djibouti (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2023, the share of Turkey and Morocco increased by X and X percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported nitrogenous fertilizers (mineral or chemical) in MENA, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with an X% share of total imports. It was followed by Israel, with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey stood at X%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (X% per year) and Israel (X% per year).

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) and Israel ($X per ton), while Iraq ($X per ton) and Turkey ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
