South Africa was the largest exporter of electric filament lamps in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X units, which was approx. 56% of total exports in 2021. Rwanda (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Nigeria (X units), Ethiopia (X units) and Botswana (X units). All these countries together took approx. 33% share of total exports. Morocco (X units) and Egypt (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to electric filament lamp exports from South Africa stood at +3.5%. At the same time, Rwanda (+72.6%), Ethiopia (+59.4%), Nigeria (+4.8%) and Botswana (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest electric filament lamp supplier in Africa, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Botswana ($X), with a 4% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 3.7% share.

In South Africa, electric filament lamp exports declined by an average annual rate of -8.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (-3.1% per year) and Egypt (-26.7% per year).

In 2021, electric filament lamp imports in Africa shrank remarkably to X units, falling by -25.4% compared with 2020. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

By contrast, Cameroon (-1.2%), Morocco (-8.0%), Ghana (-9.2%), South Africa (-11.9%) and Algeria (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Burkina Faso (+6.6 p.p.), Libya (+5.3 p.p.), Tanzania (+3.7 p.p.), Kenya (+3.6 p.p.), Senegal (+3.1 p.p.), Guinea (+2.5 p.p.) and Togo (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Algeria and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -3.2% and -22.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Libya ($X), Morocco ($X) and Tanzania ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 26% share of total imports. These countries were followed by South Africa, Algeria, Kenya, Guinea, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Senegal and Togo, which together accounted for a further 33%.
