U.S. Meat Price in Averages $5,049 per Ton

U.S. Meat Export Price in September 2022

In September 2022, the meat price amounted to $5,049 per ton (FOB, US), waning by -3.8% against the previous month. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 an increase of 2.6% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $5,362 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to September 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($10.9 per kg), while the average price for exports to Colombia ($2,717 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Meat Export Prices by Type

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major types of exported product. In September 2022, the product with the highest price was goat meat ($9,022 per ton), while the average price for exports of rabbit or hare meat ($1,291 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: horse, mule and donkey meat (+2.3%), while the prices for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.

U.S. Meat Exports

Meat exports from the United States contracted to 242K tons in September 2022, waning by -7.6% on August 2022 figures. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 13% against the previous month. The exports peaked at 270K tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, meat exports shrank to $1.2B (IndexBox estimates) in September 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 with an increase of 16% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at 1.4M tons in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to September 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

U.S. Meat Exports by Type

Pork (152K tons), beef (cattle meat) (89K tons) and lamb and sheep meat (291 tons) were the main products of meat exports from the United States, with a combined 100% share of total exports. These products were followed by meat of camels and other animals, rabbit or hare meat and goat meat, which together accounted for a further 0.1%.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the biggest increases were in goat meat (with a CAGR of +18.9%), while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the most traded types of meat in the United States were beef (cattle meat) ($764M), pork ($453M) and lamb and sheep meat ($1.5M), with a combined 100% share of total exports. These products were followed by meat of camels and other animals, rabbit or hare meat and goat meat, which together accounted for a further 0.1%.

In terms of the main product categories, goat meat, with a CAGR of +12.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

U.S. Meat Exports by Country

Mexico (74K tons), Japan (44K tons) and China (34K tons) were the main destinations of meat exports from the United States, with a combined 63% share of total exports. South Korea, Canada, Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

From January 2022 to September 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Colombia (with a CAGR of +3.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($236M), South Korea ($225M) and Mexico ($212M) appeared to be the largest markets for meat exported from the United States worldwide, with a combined 55% share of total exports. China, Canada, Taiwan (Chinese), the Dominican Republic and Colombia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Colombia, with a CAGR of +4.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
