Beef Meat Price in Mexico Contracts for Four Consecutive Months to $6.3K per Ton

Mexico Beef Export Price per Ton in July 2022

In July 2022, the beef price per ton amounted to $6.3K (FOB, Mexico), with a decrease of -2.7% against the previous month. Overall, the export price recorded a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2022 when the average export price increased by 2.1% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $7.4K per ton in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to July 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In July 2022, the country with the highest price was the United States ($6.3K per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea totaled $5.6K per ton.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+0.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Mexico Beef Export Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was meat; of bovine animals, boneless cuts, fresh or chilled ($7.4K per ton), while the average price for exports of meat; of bovine animals, cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses), fresh or chilled ($4.7K per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: meat; of bovine animals, boneless cuts, frozen (+0.9%), while the prices for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

Mexico Beef Exports

Beef exports from Mexico dropped to 23K tons in July 2022, which is down by -6.2% on June 2022 figures. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 with an increase of 13% month-to-month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 30K tons. From June 2022 to July 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, beef exports contracted to $142M (IndexBox estimates) in July 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2022 with an increase of 12% against the previous month. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $213M. From June 2022 to July 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Mexico Beef Exports by Type

Meat; of bovine animals, boneless cuts, fresh or chilled (13K tons), meat; of bovine animals, cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses), fresh or chilled (7.4K tons) and meat; of bovine animals, boneless cuts, frozen (2.1K tons) were the main products of beef exports from Mexico, together accounting for 97% of total exports. Meat; of bovine animals, cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses), frozen lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 2.7%.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by meat; of bovine animals, cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses), frozen (with a CAGR of +6.3%), while the other products experienced a decline.

In value terms, meat; of bovine animals, boneless cuts, fresh or chilled ($93M) remains the largest type of beef exported from Mexico, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by meat; of bovine animals, cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses), fresh or chilled ($34M), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by meat; of bovine animals, boneless cuts, frozen, with an 8.5% share.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly growth rate of the export volume of meat; of bovine animals, boneless cuts, fresh or chilled totaled -2.6%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: meat; of bovine animals, cuts with bone in (excluding carcasses and half-carcasses), fresh or chilled (-5.8% per month) and meat; of bovine animals, boneless cuts, frozen (-0.6% per month).

Mexico Beef Exports by Country

the United States (22K tons) was the main destination for beef exports from Mexico, with a 97% share of total exports. It was followed by South Korea (676 tons), with a 3% share of total exports.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly growth rate of volume to the United States amounted to -1.3%.

In value terms, the United States ($138M) remains the key foreign market for beef exports from Mexico, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($3.8M), with a 2.7% share of total exports.

From January 2022 to July 2022, the average monthly growth rate of value to the United States amounted to -3.6%.
